Don’t you just love the honesty that shines through the pages of the Bible? Let me give you a good example.
In Genesis 3 just after Adam and Eve have eaten the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that God had told them not to eat from. Genesis 3:8-10 tells us: “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man,”Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
Now tell me the truth, is this not the most foolish game of hide and seek you have ever heard of? God cover your eyes, and I am going to pretend like I don’t have any problems.
Yet how many of us get caught up in this foolish game, of trying to pretend to God that we are doing just fine?
John writes in I John 1:8-10 “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His word has no place in our hearts.”
Notice what Jesus says, “When we claim to be without sin, who do we deceive?” We deceive ourselves, because we are not fooling God. He already knows. We can’t hide our sins from Him any more than Adam could hide from Him in the garden.
When will we learn that the greatest journey in life begins when we reveal that the baggage that is holding us back?
Join us this Sunday as we begin a new series of lessons on the gift of Grace that covers all our sins. Because if we are truly honest with ourselves we all need it!
